In the first chapter of Kenopanishad knowledge of Brahman is revealed. It is the eye of the eye, ear of the ear, and cannot be comprehended with the senses but because of which the senses function. It is the witness of the three states of experience, it is the substratum of world and it can be intuited in the state of meditation.

The first step is Shravanam then Mananam and Nididhyasana – meditation. But if we are unable to meditate or contemplate or unable to comprehend what the Scriptures are saying then we should do the initial Sadhana of Upasana. Upasana helps us to tune our mind to the Supreme and make it pure. Upasana is to superimpose the idea of divinity on the everyday objects, in our work, in the name and every interaction we do. Various types of Upasanas were indicated – Adhidaivic, Adhibhautic and Adhyatmic.

In the Adhidaivic Upasana one has to meditate on Supreme Reality, Ishvara as the one who is controlling the entire cosmic forces. The master of this universe.

Adhibhautic Upasana is to meditate on the Supreme as the power behind our senses. We can see the world because our eyes, senses are controlled and commanded by the Supreme.

I see an object and the same object can be seen by you too. I am the witness of what is going in my mind. That witness consciousness is also the Supreme Reality. This si Adhyatmic Upasana, meditating on the Supreme as the witness of the thoughts in our mind.

One more Upasana was given is taking the name of the Supreme, chanting and meditating on the name of Supreme. Name helps us to remember Supreme Reality and it also purifies the mind. The glory of Bhagvan’s name is mentioned in all our Scriptures, Puranas, Bhagvad Gita and the Upanishads also. By constantly chanting Bhagvan’s name, our mind will become pure and we will become fit for our Sadhana.

After giving the knowledge of Supreme and giving the knowledge of Upasana the teacher became silent. So the disciple said the following verse which appears to be strange.
